Used Car Buying Checklist
Print this checklist and bring it with you when inspecting a used vehicle.
1. Exterior & Body
- Paint & Finish: Look for color mismatches that may indicate prior repairs.
- Body Lines: Check that gaps between doors, hood, and trunk are even.
- Rust Check: Inspect wheel wells, rocker panels, and undercarriage.
- Glass & Lights: Check for cracks and ensure all lights work properly.
2. Tires & Wheels
- Tread Depth: Use the penny test or check wear bars.
- Matching Set: Confirm all tires are the same brand and size.
- Spare Tire: Verify spare tire, jack, and tools are present.
3. Under the Hood
- Fluid Levels: Oil, coolant, and brake fluid should be clean and full.
- Hoses & Belts: Look for cracks, fraying, or leaks.
- Battery: Check for corrosion and note battery age.
- Leaks: Look for wet spots or stains under the vehicle.
4. Interior & Electronics
- Odors: Check for mold, mildew, or smoke smells.
- Controls: Test A/C, windows, locks, and seats.
- Dashboard Lights: Ensure warning lights turn on and off correctly.
- Upholstery: Look for tears, stains, or water damage.
5. The Test Drive
- Engine Start: Should start quickly and idle smoothly.
- Brakes: No squealing, pulsing, or pulling.
- Steering: Tight and responsive with no clunking.
- Transmission: Smooth shifting with no slipping.
6. Paperwork & History
- VIN Check: Matches dashboard, title, and door sticker.
- Service Records: Ask for maintenance history.
- Vehicle Report: Check Carfax or AutoCheck.
- Title Status: Ensure clean title with no liens.
